WhatsApp’s new safety feature lets users easily decide whether to stay in or leave a group.

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature aimed at enhancing user safety by providing more information about groups before joining. When someone adds you to a group, you’ll now see details such as who added you, when the group was created, and who created it.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, stated that this feature is designed to help users make informed decisions about joining groups, especially when the invite comes from someone they don’t know or haven’t saved in their contacts. “This is particularly useful if you’ve just met someone or a group of people and haven’t saved their contacts yet,” WhatsApp explained in a press release on July 9.

While some users may already have access to this feature, it will be rolled out to all users in the coming weeks.

This update addresses the issue of bad actors adding users to groups to promote crypto or job scams, or to flood them with spam. To counter this, WhatsApp introduced a feature in 2019 allowing users to control who can add them to groups. Users can navigate to Settings > Account > Privacy > Groups to select between “Everyone,” “My Contacts,” or “My Contacts Except.”

Additionally, when a stranger texts you on WhatsApp, the platform will now provide more context about the account holder.
