Elon Musk is reportedly planning to construct an enormous supercomputer for his AI startup, xAI, which will incorporate 100,000 Nvidia chips by the fall of 2025. Musk’s goal is to compete with leading AI companies such as OpenAI and Meta. xAI’s Grok chatbot will leverage real-time data from Musk’s social media platform, X.
Tech mogul Elon Musk has announced plans to build an enormous supercomputer, referred to as the “gigafactory of compute,” to enhance his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, according to a report by The Information on Saturday.
Musk reportedly plans to integrate 100,000 Nvidia chips into this supercomputer, aiming for it to be operational by the fall of 2025. In a recent presentation to investors, he highlighted his personal dedication to meeting the project’s timeline.
According to the report, the proposed supercomputer is expected to be “at least four times the size of the largest GPU clusters currently in existence,” including those used by Meta for AI model training, as Musk reportedly stated.
Since the launch of OpenAI’s generative AI tool, ChatGPT, in 2022, the AI field has become fiercely competitive, with major companies like Microsoft, Google, and Meta, as well as startups such as Anthropic and Stability AI, striving for dominance.
Musk is one of the few investors with the financial capacity to compete with AI giants like OpenAI, Google, and Meta.
xAI is currently developing Grok, a chatbot designed to access real-time information from X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, which is also owned by Musk.
Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left the organization in 2018, later voicing concerns about its shift towards a profit-driven model under CEO Sam Altman. In March, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that the company had deviated from its original non-profit mission of making AI research accessible to all.
OpenAI has dismissed Musk’s lawsuit and his calls for open-source development, attributing them to his dissatisfaction following his departure from the company.
