Microsoft has established a new AI division, headed by ex-Google DeepMind CEO Mustafa Suleyman, to propel the development of Copilot and additional AI offerings. Suleyman, recognized for his role in founding DeepMind as well as his involvement in various controversies, has been brought on board to bolster Microsoft’s AI expertise.
Microsoft has unveiled a new AI division under the leadership of Mustafa Suleyman, the former CEO of Google DeepMind. This new group will concentrate on enhancing Copilot, along with other consumer AI initiatives and research within the company.
Suleyman, previously at the helm of the AI startup Inflection AI, has transitioned to Microsoft with several principal members of his past team. His recruitment, at the age of 39, is viewed as a strategic move by Microsoft to strengthen its internal AI expertise. This comes on the heels of a recent $16 million investment by Microsoft, led by Satya Nadella, in the French AI startup Mistral AI.
1) Mustafa Suleyman was born in London in August 1984 and grew up in a humble family setting, with his father, who hails from Syria, working as a taxi driver, and his mother, of English descent, serving as a nurse.
2) He began his higher education in Philosophy and Theology at Oxford University but left in his second year. He then founded a non-profit organization named Muslim Youth Helpline, which expanded to become one of the UK’s most significant mental health support services for Muslims.
3) Mustafa Suleyman, alongside partners Shane Legg and Demis Hassabis, co-founded DeepMind, an AI lab that quickly became well-known in the technology community and was acquired by Google in 2014. Suleyman remained an influential figure at DeepMind, often discussing the potential of AI and the importance of ethical guidelines.
4) During his tenure at DeepMind, Suleyman was involved in several controversies, especially concerning the company’s operations in the UK healthcare industry. In 2017, it was revealed that London’s Royal Free Hospital had illegally shared 1.6 million patient records with DeepMind, an incident for which Suleyman later expressed regret.
In a separate issue, several DeepMind staff members raised concerns about Suleyman’s management approach, leading him to acknowledge his mistakes publicly, admitting that he was overly demanding and intense in his leadership style.
5) In 2019, DeepMind placed Suleyman on leave, and subsequently, he transitioned to a role at Google where he oversaw AI product management. He left Google in 2022 to establish a new venture, Inflection AI, alongside LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. This new company focuses on developing AI technology that avoids engaging in racist, sexist, or violent behaviors.
