Starting January 2024, Amazon Prime Video users will experience the introduction of ads between movies and TV shows. This rollout is anticipated to be global, encompassing India, while the core Prime benefits remain unchanged.
  • Amazon Prime Video is set to integrate ads into its digital content.
  • Ads will be displayed between movies and TV shows, commencing January 29.
  • Users have the option to go ad-free by subscribing to an additional $2.99 per month plan.

After Netflix, Amazon Prime Video is shifting its focus towards incorporating advertisements into its platform. Earlier this year, the OTT giant disclosed its plans to introduce ‘meaningfully fewer ads’ within its digital content, encompassing both movies and TV shows. The ads will be integrated into the existing pricing plans, but users can choose an ad-free version by paying a slightly higher fee. Although the initial announcement did not specify the rollout date, it has now been confirmed.

Amazon Prime has recently informed users in the US, UK, Germany, Canada, and various other regions through email about the upcoming inclusion of advertisements. According to the notification, users can expect to encounter ads within their content starting January 29. The email states, “‘Limited advertisements’ will enable us to sustain investments in engaging content and further increase that investment over an extended period,” as reported by The Verge.

In a recent email blast to Amazon Prime users worldwide, the tech giant spilled the beans about a new addition – ads! Yes, you heard it right. Starting January 29, your binge sessions might get a surprise guest in the form of ads. But fear not, Amazon Prime vows to keep it way cooler than your regular TV channels or other streaming platforms.

Amazon Prime aims to provide “significantly fewer ads compared to linear TV and other streaming TV providers.” Users are reassured that no action is required, and the current Prime membership price remains unchanged. For those desiring an ad-free streaming experience, an additional $2.99 (roughly Rs 248.8) per month can be paid. The email includes a link for members who want to sign up for the ad-free option on Prime Video.

Meanwhile, Amazon assures its users that the introduction of limited advertisements on Prime Video does not impact the current price of Prime membership. Presently, ads are being introduced in the UK, US, and other international regions, with global expansion, including India, anticipated. The fundamental Prime benefits remain unchanged. In India, Amazon Prime is priced at Rs 299 per month or Rs 1499 annually. Additionally, there is a cost-effective annual plan called Amazon Prime Lite, available at Rs 799 in India.

Besides the regular plans for Amazon Prime Video, there’s also Freevee, a free streaming service with ads. Amazon mentioned in an email that things like live sports and content on Amazon Freevee will still have ads. Amazon’s choice to add ads to Prime Video follows what other streaming services are doing. Many are raising their prices or including ads in cheaper plans. Disney Plus and Netflix are doing this too. But Amazon is keeping the same monthly fee for Amazon Prime. If you want to skip ads, you can pay a bit extra starting from January 29.
