In Brief:
- Meta is gearing up to reveal AR glasses soon.
- Meta’s CTO claims these glasses are the ‘most advanced technology on the planet.’
- This project is known as ‘Project Nazare.’
Since November 2022, artificial intelligence has dominated the tech landscape, sparked by the introduction of ChatGPT by OpenAI, impressing users with its human-like responses. This AI chatbot gained rapid popularity, prompting users to explore its diverse applications. Over time, ChatGPT received several enhancements and is soon expected to incorporate real-time browsing capabilities. Major tech players like Google and Microsoft have also ventured into the AI chatbot arena. However, one notable absence in the AI race was Meta until September of this year when the tech giant revealed its smart glasses accompanied by an AI assistant.
In the latest development, reports indicate that Meta is set to elevate its technology game by introducing AR glasses. According to Meta’s CTO, these AR glasses stand out as the most advanced piece of technology ever created on the planet.
Meta’s Chief Technology Officer Discusses Advanced AR Glasses
Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth, as reported by Business Insider and originally credited to tech newsletter Command Line, declared that their AR glasses are “the most advanced piece of technology on the planet in its domain.” Additionally, he asserted that in the realm of consumer electronics, these smart glasses “might be the most advanced thing that we’ve ever produced as a species.”
Meta’s AR glasses, known as “Project Nazare,” may not hit the shelves until the end of the decade. The team aims to unveil a prototype by 2024, with lighter and more advanced versions in 2026 and 2028. The glasses are designed for a future without smartphones, offering immersive experiences beyond standard video calls, such as interacting with holograms.
However, challenges persist, particularly in creating clear and affordable displays. Meta’s CTO, Andrew Bosworth, acknowledges the need for advancements in materials and ensuring sufficient power to reduce charging frequency. Despite these hurdles, Bosworth is optimistic about AI advancements, anticipating their potential to surpass initial expectations. While the integration of a “great AI assistant” is in consideration, specific details about AI features are yet to be revealed.
When Meta Unveiled Its Smart Glasses
Meta introduced its latest smart glasses, a collaboration with Ray-Ban, in September of this year. These glasses go beyond playing music, taking photos, and recording videos; they also enable users to livestream their perspective directly on Facebook and Instagram. A pulsating white light around the lens indicates when recording is in progress.
Meta stated in a blog post announcing the glasses, “We’re giving them (creators) the ability to easily livestream their first-person POV directly from the glasses to Instagram or Facebook. You can even see the comments in your preview, or hear them out loud to engage with your community as you’re living in the moment.”
